Hair falling out is one of those things that can feel a bit worrying when you first notice it. You run your fingers through your hair, see strands on your pillow, or watch a little too much go down the shower drain – and suddenly you’re asking yourself, “Is it normal?”
The short answer is: yes, to a point!
Hair shedding is a completely natural, but there are times when it can be a sign of something else.
Outside of the natural cycle, there are a few everyday reasons why shedding might be more noticeable:
Stress: Physical or emotional stress can push more hairs into the shedding phase.
Hormones: Postpartum changes, menopause, or thyroid issues can all affect hair.
Diet: Low protein, iron, or essential vitamins can make hair weaker.
Seasonal shedding: Believe it or not, many people shed a bit more in autumn. So you may notice that soon!
Heat & styling: Frequent colouring, heat tools, or tight styles can speed up breakage and loss.
When you might need to look into a little more ⬇️
It’s worth keeping an eye on your hair if:
You notice bald patches or sudden thinning.
Your parting looks noticeably wider.
Hair is coming out in clumps.
I am always happy to have a look at your scalp during your appt if your concerned, however a GP or trichologist would be the person to refer to if your concerned.
As I mentioned earlier, Autumn is the time of year we might notice it more than usual so relax if you do see it a little more than normal.
