What does hard water do to your hair? And what can you do about it?

Theres a lot of fancy hair products out there that say they are good for hard water, but what is the hard water actually doing to your hair and what products do you need to help? Heres my 2p’s worth ⬇️

What is it?

Essentially it is water that is high in mineral content, in particular magnesium and calcium. Its not harmful to health but its not great for your hair. That mineral content can cling to your hair, leaving behind a film or residue. It can have the same affects on skin too!

What can you do about it?

This depends on how far your willling to go or how much your willing to spend 🤑

Heres a few solutions in order of cost;

A natural remedy

Rinse your hair with somethind acidic like ACV, or lemon juice if you prefer to smell less like fish and chips 😆

For the final rinse, dilute a tbsp in water 👌🏻

Change your haircare

There are some great haircare solutions available now which really help. Its the shampoo that is going to help you the most. I have a few tried and tested faves. The Loreal Metal Detox is great value or K18 peptide prep detox shampoo is a gooden if you dont mind spending a bit more.

Also make sure your using a conditioner with more moisturising qualities as hard water can make your hair a little dry too.

Get to the root of the problem

Before even looking at the solutions above I would highly highly recomend getting a filter for your shower! Honestly not just my hair but my skin feels so different! Smoother, shinier and softer to touch! My husband Greg even commented that he had noticed his hair felt different!

At £65, helloklean universal shower heads are good quality and totally worth it! They even do a rainfall shower head 👀

There are more permenant and more sophisicated setups you can install at home that are good but obviously cost a tad more 😆
